It's a very touchy subject that nobody wants to discuss except, perhaps, serious historians.
But, there actually were some upsides. If you compared the life of an African slave to that of an Irish indentured servant, the slaves had it much better. The slaves were fed. They received healthcare. They had shelter and clothing. They had days off.
But we're not allowed to discuss these historical facts.
Yes, slavery was without a doubt an abomination that sealed the destruction of this country from Day One but it wasn't a total horror show for the slaves, many of whom would fight on the side of the South and then regain employment from their former masters after the Civil War was over (with much less benefits than they previously enjoyed),

Black people learned how to farm while they were slaves. That’s why so many of them became sharecroppers after they were freed from slavery.

Native Americans practiced slavery.
Free blacks in the USA owned slaves.
The Romans and Greek owned slave.
