Replacement halogen bulbs for auto headlights would have to be exempted. There are (or at least were until very recently) no replacement-for-incandescent-bulbs LED bulbs approved by the DOT for on-road headlight use. Yes, people mis-apply LED replacements for, say H11 bulbs, but the LEDs can’t yet give the sharp cutoff of the top of the beam and overall proper pattern that the nearly “point source” halogens can. If you get blinded by what seems to be a conventional headlight, there’s a good chance some idiot put in a LED replacement of a halogen bulb. That should only be done for off road lights.
Note that new car dedicated LED bulbs are fine and can give VERY good patterns / cutoff when properly designed. But, they don’t use the reflectors designed for halogen bulbs.
Overall, though, this ban by the Biden Admin., to eliminate incandescent & halogen bulbs, is not about safety, it is just one more example of their arrogant, top down style. And I say that as a user of MANY LED lights and bulbs.
The issue with car headlamps and LED’s is the cost. Unlike home use where LED’s are now very cost effective, spending $1500 on a LED headlamp is ridiculous.
There are plenty if high quality led bulbs for headlights that offer close to halogen patterns.
They cost 100+ for a pair, but they are out there.
This is why people use the cheapo amazon/ebay 30 dollar leds that do as you describe.
People better get over the small things and figure out the Elite has grown weary of the little people polluting their planet and they figured out the easiest and cheapest way to handle it is to just eliminate the user of the products, not the products.
