Sheesh. All he had to do was be a more refined version of Trump. This means in part criticizing the deep state. Any support for J6 persecution is support for the deep state. Ron is digging his own grave.

But therein lies the conundrum that the DeSantis campaign faces. Being a more refined version of Trump is a pretty lame strategy. It’s not a strong enough reason for voters to switch from Trump to him in large numbers. Most Trump supporters view Trump’s “lack of refinement” as an asset. So, it’s a pretty weak strategy which can only work if Trump is discredited by people other than him or prevented from running for office in some way.
DeSantis can’t attack Trump too hard if he’s invested in trying to be a more refined version of Trump. That’s why he has to resort to these subtle digs like slipping in a comment about Trump not acting forcefully enough on J6 while coming out against the lawfare directed at him. He does after all need to court Trump’s supporters. There are not enough anti-Trump Republicans for him to win the nomination. Anything more aggressive than the subtle swipes he currently engages in, and he blows his cover.
