It looks like I won’t be going to the cook-off. The beans are still hard, and I’m trying to figure out what the cause is. They were soaked for 10 hours, so I can only think the water may be salty. I don’t drink it, as it is too hard for my kidney to handle. So unless the beans soften up in the next two hours, the chili will be cooking past bedtime.
It’s worth checking out, for sure. This complex has only 24 apartments and most of the tenants know each other, if nothing else, by the apartment number — “This is so-and-so, and he lives in number blah.” We may not all be good friends, but we each know about a third of the residents. So we know if a package is delivered to us and it isn’t ours, we know who it belongs to!
Oh, too bad! Can you freeze it for leftovers?
I love the wild hair on that baby kitty!
Good morning. Did you have a good night?
I was exhausted last night. Of course, I would be. I finally turned off the crock pot at 1915 and will put the chili in bags to freeze. It’s cold enough in here that it should be OK.
The only thing I know for sure is that the next time I make this recipe, I’ll use bottled water to soak the beans in. It’s the only thing I can think of. Even if the beans were old, which I doubt very much, ten hours should be enough soaking time. “Overnight” is only eight hours, as my mother reckoned it.
It smells wonderful! It was in my nose all day yesterday, so I didn’t really notice it until this morning.
Are you going somewhere fun today?
Happy Caturday, Wordle Fans!
Not so good today, as I think I’m hung over from all the technicolor dreams.

Now I’m off to get dressed and bag the chili for the freezer. Have a great first day of the weekend!
The chili is all bagged up and in the freezer. There are five massive helpings and one “normal” helping, which means if I don’t give any away, I’ll have about 12 meals. However, I plan to give it away! Or most of it, anyway.
Now, I need to write to Charlie, since I didn’t do it yesterday.
Oh, yes. I finally got the ambulance bill from July, after the insurance companies, including Medicare got done with it. I thought it would be about $800, but it was a little over a quarter of that. Not like here. If I had to get transported by ambulance to St George, it would cost about $4000. A perfect reason to stay healthy!!

Good Saturday Morning!
Very cloudy and damp here this morning, hoping that it burns off and we get some sun soon...
‘Face, if you made your chili the way we do in Texas, you wouldn’t have to be concerned about beans! π

Good morning. Not a bad night until Jake decided I needed to get up. He tried everything: walking over the pillow, tearing around the bathroom, scratching the carpet. What a yutz. Then he got in my chair with the heated blanket and made a ball.
Asuncion came over to work on music for next week. I need to make some changes to some words, so I can give her all the copies tomorrow.
Frank is going to play Dungeons & Dragons at the library from 2:00 to 4:00, and DP and I are talking about an outdoor walk while he does that. There’s a nice “greenway” through Matthews. Kathleen will probably want to stay at the library.
Vlad went off with Tom and hasn’t been seen. When we got home from choir last night, Frank told us that Vlad has been sent to the Russian front, so I hope he writes, at least.
Thank you for gorgeous kitteh and hope all’s well.
This is a Mexican recipe, handed down through at least three generations to me. Colonia Juarez is across the river (roughly) from El Paso, but this recipe will never qualify as Tex-Mex. Also, if you use meat and no beans in your chili, you’re making chili con carne. If you make it like I did, it’s chili con carne y frijoles!
I doubt you would ever taste this chili anywhere, because it has an ingredient (or two) that isn’t (aren’t) found in most chili recipes. I can’t tell you what that is, or the ghosts of a thousand ancestors will inhabit my dreams forever.
(You can have the recipe if you want it...FReepmail me if you do.)
Jake reminds me of a spoiled child, sometimes! If he can’t get what he wants he’ll make himself very large and very loud until you cave. Silly cat.
FD and Rob’t got more of their furniture today. Last week, it was the dining table and chairs, this week it was the coffee and end tables, and one occasional table. So their new house is finally furnished, a year (or two?) after they moved in. Good for them. They paid cash for their furniture, so all they have is mortgage and utilities and HOA fees.
I need to get up from here and make the bed and do the dishes. But first...I have to get Charlie’s letter out!
Walmart had a sale on Pioneer Woman things, and I found a 100% cotton bathroom rug for $4.50. Free shipping! It only took two weeks to get here, but it’s almost big enough to cover the entire bathroom floor. No. Small room. It’s not a color that matches the frog decor, but I can live with it because it doesn’t have rubber backing, so it’s not going to fall apart after a hundred washings.
It’s another gorgeous sunny day, but very cool. I need more long-johns!
“Just slowly.”
Darn that ol’ physics!
Somebody somewhere has to have done the math of orbital deterioration of the Earth around the Sun to determine when the planet will ultimately “splash down.”
On in two. But a Maxwell Smart “Missed it by THAT much” putt left me to settle for a bogey.
Off to the 4th tee at 1 under par.

I’m glad you found a bargain!
I get an email from the county every couple of weeks, telling me about their job openings. They’re currently taking applications for positions in the Wastewater Treatment department, and I’m going to make James apply. The only requirements are a high school diploma and the ability to follow instructions and learn new skills, which he has.
James said *mumble mumble* when I told him about it, but it’s got paid training, a career path, good government benefits, and a business that’s only going to get bigger.
There are LOTS of benefits to a government job, even at the local level. I would have retired from the county if CFIDS hadn’t changed my plans. It was a good job and I could have transferred to any other department. James and his hair need to apply. Though maybe he won’t want to because of his hair. Still, if he keeps it in a pony tail for his P&R job, he shouldn’t have to change it for the Wastewater Treatment plant. He should apply. I mean, what has he got to lose?
I made my mother’s sandwich spread today, and was glad I still had some bread left. I’ll have to make another loaf on Monday or Tuesday, as I only have maybe two slices left. Besides. I love the way my house smells when a loaf of bread is baking!
I’m watching a new series on Acorn, called “WPC 57,” about the first female cop in a small town in the ‘50s and all the stuff she has to go through in order to be respected. Her ultimate boss is the guy who plays Hercule Flambeau, on Father Brown. Some of the things they have wrong, but I figure most of the budget went for recognizable faces, but the storyline is good. Some of the no-name actors are good enough to make you hate them! It’s only 45 minutes an episode which is good.
Good morning. I’m happy you got your TV working! DP and had a nice outdoor walk yesterday afternoon while Frank played D&D at the library. Then we took Tom out to celebrate his birthday some more.
We had some drinks and pizza, and then we went to the nerd game bar and played “Ticket to Ride: Europe.” Tom bought another drink and got me a Diet Coke. The game was a little different from the original Ticket to Ride. Tom won by a significant margin, and I was second.
Kathleen is doing pet care for a neighbor this week, so I had to get her out of bed this morning.
