From what I have seen of videos of the 82nd recently standards are rock bottom. PT is a option not mandatory by the looks of the troops, seeing a Division run with every type of footwear you could imagine being worn , no Jump boots,Cripes.The rot is at the top and has infected everything.

Two major factors about paratroops were that they had to be in super shape because you need to be prepared to run/move for miles to get to your actual objective while carrying your gear, and then be ready to attack when you get there.

The other and most important was that pound for pound the paratroop has to be a better man than average. Airborne is dropped into a situation of being surrounded, outgunned, and outnumbered, they parachute into the Alamo, all of which amounts to having to screen the men to make sure you are squeezing as much quality and courage as you can into the units that you send on those missions.
