LGBTQ Floridians once hoped DeSantis could be an ally. Not anymore
CNN ^ | March 9, 2023 | Steve Contorno

In his first year as Florida governor in 2019, Ron DeSantis paid a somber visit to the memorial for the 49 people who lost their lives when a man opened fire at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando.

His wife, Casey, clutched a bouquet of white flowers as DeSantis took in the faces of those who died on that June night in 2016. Most were Latino. Many were gay. Before leaving, DeSantis signed a wall with the words: “Florida will always remember these precious lives.”

For Florida’s LGBTQ community, the day brought a glimmer of optimism that this new Republican leader might listen to their concerns, said Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, an Orlando Democrat and the state’s first openly gay Latino lawmaker. The governor, Smith said, “appeared to be extending an olive branch to the LGBTQ community.”

“An olive branch,” Smith added, “which he has since rescinded, stomped on and destroyed.”

... “DeSantis is likely to run for president of the United States and a lot of this is posturing on his part,” said Sen. Jeff Brandes, a Republican who voted against the bill. “It’s all red meat. It’s not red meat for the state of Florida but for the national base. It’s all about staying in the headlines.”

This article from March shows just how performative and fake this all is.

Just what you would expect from a GOPe candidate "presenting" as a social conservative.

The Globalists (DeSantis supporters) are now ‘getting angry’ at DeSantis on the LGBT issue, in the hope that maybe that approach (reverse psychology) can peel some of the Trump support over to DeSantis.

Won’t work...it’s too late, Trump supporters are sticking to him like glue.

I don’t know what this is.

It seems like the DeSwamp campaign is tiptoeing and trying our this issue by retweeting, then saying”it’s not the campaign”.

Anyway, it’s not working.

Just another self-inflicted wound by one of the worst campaigns I can remember.

Does anyone recall if Cruz in 2016 tried “Trumps too faggy” as a campaign tactic ?

DeSwamp has a lot of former Cruz people in his campaign.

Yet another article hysteria article by the usual sources saying that “all of the gays are leaving Florida.” Which of course will cause havoc for Florida’s soccer teams as well as many choirs. But aside from a few head cases, it’s not true. Also not true is the idea that all of the black folks are leaving Florida, or the ethnic Mexicans leaving Texas.

And? All the gop gets on their knees for different groups. Once Trump got the nomination he went full gay marriage and support of lgbtqs2. Every candidate does things differently. You can never trust a republican or democrat.

Yeah, DeSantis is doing a good job "presenting" as a social conservative by actually passing conservative legislation and winning conservative victories.

“We know we’re stuck with trump.”

I wish DeSantis would have either understood that, or had shown himself to be Trump-like, rather than Pence-like, at least when it came to the people around him and Ukraine.

Sounds like they are ready to come up to DeSantis and slap him.
Could risk breaking a nail doing it but it’s on principle.

I just hope people get out and vote. If Biden ends up with both houses of congress, we’re screwed big. I know in our bubble, it’s all sunshine and lollypops. Evidence from the ridiculous thinking of 2022 where some were saying 40 seats plus and 6 to 10 senate seats. That was very irresponsible thinking. We ended up with a 4 seat majority in the house and no senate. Yes some cheating but regardless it was dismal. How is trump going to win Wisconsin, Nevada, Georgia and Arizona to become president. He needs all four to win.

DeSantis is actually getting socially conservative legislation passed. He's not just talking endlessly about it, like so many others. He's easily the most effective social conservative the US has had controlling a state in decades. If you care about social conservatism, you should be applauding DeSantis. If all you care about is Trump regardless of the facts, you'll do what you're doing.

March 9?

You’ve obviously lost your mind over DeSantis’s anti-gay policies today, and I have no idea what your supposed point is here now. I guess you think since he simply paid his respects to their tragic deaths, it somehow means he’s pro gay, despite all the recent laws he’s passed to fight their agenda. Bizarre thinking to say the least.

Ah yes, merely "presenting" by having consistently advocated for - and indeed implemented - many such policies that are now law over the course of his entire tenure as governor.

They’re “now” getting angry? But not over the last several years?

It figures that the sexual deviants only saw what they wanted to see, as they so desperately seek to be considered normal.
The rest of us just saw a tragedy of unnecessary human deaths and sympathized with their grieving friends and families.

Making a sympathy speech is expected of government officials after such an event. It doesn’t mean that the victims’ perversions were accepted, just that their deaths were publicly acknowledged.

I'm not gonna ask how you know this stuff. I never get answers that make any sense when I ask Only Trumpers how they know something. I just get the original claim stated in a different way - or some insult.

But here's a question, since you are obviously angry at DeSantis paying his respects after a brutal massacre:

What was Trump's position on the shooting?

I guess you think he supported it.

Here is Trump's statement after the shooting:
We express our deepest sympathies to the victims, the wounded, and their families. We mourn as one people for our nation’s loss, and pledge our support to any and all who need it. I would like to ask now that we all observe a moment of silence for the victims of this attack.

Thank you. Our nation stands together in solidarity with the members of Orlando’s LGBT community. They have been through something that nobody could ever experience. This is a very dark moment in America’s history. A radical Islamic terrorist targeted the nightclub, not only because he wanted to kill Americans, but in order to execute gay and lesbian citizens, because of their sexual orientation.

It’s a strike at the heart and soul of who we are as a nation. It’s an assault on the ability of free people to live their lives, love who they want, and express their identity. It’s an attack on the right of every single American to live in peace and safety in their own country.

We need to respond to this attack on America as one united people, with force, purpose, and determination. But the current politically correct response cripples our ability to talk and to think and act clearly. We’re not acting clearly, we’re not talking clearly, we’ve got problems.

If we don’t get tough, and if we don’t get smart, and fast, we’re not going to have our country anymore. There will be nothing, absolutely nothing, left. The killer, whose name I will not use, or ever say, was born in Afghan, of Afghan parents, who immigrated to the United States.
