Lowell P. Weicker Jr., who swaggered through three terms as Connecticut’s last Republican senator, challenging Richard Nixon over Watergate and the GOP’s rightward shift under Ronald Reagan, then willed the state’s income tax into existence in a second act as a third-party governor, died Wednesday. He was 92.

I still remember a coworker of mine back in the late 1980's who was an avowed socialist practically loving the guy.
Former MD Governor Hogan keeps saying he's a Reagan Republican. Hogan is a phony. And the Orwellian media began painting Reagan as almost a liberal after Trump was elected.
92? He was still young enough to make a primary run against Trump! :)
Arnold kept quoting Reagan.
I can’t recall there ever being a true conservative Republican politician from Connecticut in the past 50 years—for that matter from any New England state.
“He was probably the biggest RINO to sit as a Republican senator, at least in the past 50 years.”
That’s saying a lot, considering the other ‘Republicans’ from that part of the country. My vote is Lincoln Chaffee, who supported the Democrats far more than the Republicans.
As a resident of the State of Connecticut I have nothing good to say about Lowell Weiker.
So I won’t say anything else.
He gave CT the income tax and it’s expanded ever since. The current governor is looking to be the man that brought tolls to CT. CT is a lost cause.
Weicker was an awful person. He is the one that introduced a state income tax to Connecticut, the only Republican governor ever to lobby for a state income tax.
I remember when Republicans were supporting Joe Lieberman over him. He was part of that generation of truly liberal Republicans like Rockefeller and Lindsey that died off by the mid-1970s (other than him).
Chaffee was the one I envisioned carrying a lace hanky around the Senate chambers when it came time to vote...I also envisioned him passing that hanky off to Lindsey Graham when Lincorl’s time in the Senate ended.
State income tax thanks to him.
Turned on a dime. He went from loving Goldwater to hating Nixon. He’s like all the rest of them. Still it’s butts in the seats. Wouldn’t you want 2 of them in the senate right now?
Jiggle the handle.
“Ditto”
His electoral demographic changed so he changed in order to keep his political career going. Typical of the career politician on both sides of the aisle.
He brought the income tax to CT. He didn’t care how many people hated him. He was an arrogant sob.
Well I do. Good riddance to bad garbage. You can map CT's economic decline to the moment that lying sack of crap pushed through the state income tax.
