Putin may be at max support level from Russians and trying to hold their support. Wagner is not unknown to the people and may be capable of gaining support.

Is what Putin has now sufficient to sustain him through this?
If the lives of the average Rusdian have not improved since the Soviets fell, Putin may wish he had devoted more to improving them.

After the disaster that was Yeltsin Putin reined in the oligarchs and achieved a certain stability that the Russian people supported. The lives of most Russians has gradually improved with his leadership and the reason why 80% of the populace supports him. Sure Putin is corrupt like the rest of them, but it’s all relative. Putin is vastly superior to Yeltsin who was a drunken idiot willing to sell Russia out.
