So (and I say this as a Floridian) if DeSantis REALLY wanted to make a name for himself in next year's election, instead of running around the country, he would come back to Tallahassee, call a special session of the state legislature, and set up a state immigration enforcement mechanism that would find illegal immigrants within Florida's borders, gather them up, and transport them out of the country, at the rate of perhaps 500-1000 a day, as the rest of the nation watches, and the Feds, because of this ruling, can't do anything about it--they will try, of course, which will cause a "constitutional crisis," but it's the kind of "crisis" we desperately need now.
Excellent idea! But the sticking point is funding the effort. Who pays for it?
“[states can] gather them up, and transport them out of the country ... and the Feds, because of this ruling, can’t do anything about it”
The legal verbiage is over my head. Could it be that the States can do these things but they want the Federal Government to pay for it?
Did you see the term in court’s opinion “removable noncitizen”? What a euphemism!
