When Thresher (it might have been Scorpion) imploded, one of the screws passed through the sub’s bow as it folded in on itself. BOOM. Certainly the sound of it was heard by someone. I think the past few days of hurrying search snd rescue was for show.

You’re thinking of the Scorpion. The after section of the hull “telescoped” leaving the prop and the drive line laying in the mud. The reduction gear mount, where the prop shaft mounts, is the solidest section of the hull so that when the hull collapses it squeezes itself from end to end. The bow, forward of the reactor compartment, had a big hole in itself so there was no pressure to telescope which is why the torpedo room is more or less intact.
