How does the DOJ/FBI get a hold of the tapes and erase or destroy them? They would have had to be in contact with the maker of those recordings and taken them from him. Would the maker have allowed the FBI to take them, especially if it was in a foreign country and a foreign citizen? Also, the maker could have, and likely did, make copies of the tapes. So, it's doubtful that the FBI did what you suggest could've happened to the recordings.
