We are bullying Hungary into supporting Sweden’s entry into NATO.

Hungary should be free to choose if they support that or not.

The US is absolutely no different than the USSR in this matter while “pretending” to respect Hungary’s independence.

We completely respect Hungary’s independence. Short of Hungary’s direct participation in an attack against NATO countries, you won’t see NATO troops invading Hungary. To be honest, it’s not even clear why Hungary is in NATO. It doesn’t actually need to be. It doesn’t border any big aggressive states. The principal rationalization for Hungary’s alliance with Germany in the run-up to and during WWII, followed by a Cold War allied with Russia, is the reality that it faced a threat from Germany, and later, from Russia. Today’s situation is completely different. Of its non-NATO neighbors, Austria and Serbia are military non-entities, Ukraine isn’t expansionist, and pretty much spends all of its limited resources guarding against Russia. Why is Hungary in NATO? Maybe it would be better off neutral, much as Finland was, until recently.
