Win one as the Gipper? Good luck with that.
This week the Republican field for the presidency took near-final form, and it became clear that among Donald Trump’s suddenly expanded number of rivals, some are modeling themselves to varying degrees on that other former president, Ronald Reagan. That strategy is a way of breaking, if only implicitly, with Trump and Trumpism: going back to the future by invoking the most beloved of modern presidents among Republicans.
Of all the announced candidates, none is more overt about embracing Reagan over Trump than Trump’s once-obsequious vice president, Mike Pence. At 64, Pence is among the older Trump challengers in the bunch, old enough for Reagan to have been a formative influence for him in real time — as Pence recounted in his presidential announcement in Iowa on Wednesday

Reagan would applaud Trump’s policies, even though President Trump and President Reagan used very different styles.
Ho hum, and the same media outlets back in about 1980 and onwards lectured about how Reagan himself was the antithesis or betrayer of ones like Gerald Ford and even Dwight Eisenhower.
Where is Pence’s condemnation of the garbage Federal indictment of President Trump? Where is DeSantis’s?
ha ha ha ...snort ...
He's just legally collecting the pay off ... what a scum
LAT is fine with the demise of a free America.
Pence has no chance in he** of becoming President and I believe the RINOs know it and like it that way. I believe the RINOs like McConnell like being in the minority. That way, they don’t need to do much to collect their paychecks and can blame everything on the Dems.
Spot on. The media despised Reagan back then.
Reagan was a republican back when there were actual republicans doing republican things. For instance, there were these things called the federal budget and the government had to live within the budget. There were also actual republicans working inside the federal bureaucracy to institute republican policies. That’s all gone now.
I agree with Attorney Lin Wood, who Predicts Pence ‘Will Face Execution by Firing Squad’.
Times have changed dramatically since the 1980s. The Cold War is over - thanks in no small part to Reagan ending it.
Reagan believed in limited government, he was socially conservative and he stayed out of foreign wars. The populists and nationalists support all of those things still.
We did not have the giveaway trade deals like NAFTA and the WTO and the TPP under Reagan. Also China was economically backward and did not have access to the US market under Reagan.
Ronaldus Magnus was great for his time. The right policies today would be different. Times have changed.
Reagan said he felt like he shook the hand of the president, when he shook hands with Trump.
What did Reagan say about Pence?
Exactly!
Putting Mike Pants in the same league with Ronald Reagan is like putting an AMC Pacer in the same league with a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing.
FUMP.
Yeah statewide abortions while governor and illegal Alien love and citizenship as president. Definitely need more of that.
The dumber part of all articles like this is that it defines “party” as the party structure, not its voters. Or even its office-holders.
It seems to me that Trumps support comes almost entirely from the sort of person who voted or volunteered for Reagan.
Indeed.
Who can forget the line-up of primary wannabes in Trump's first run? The spectacle of those losers on a stage with Trump still exists in my mind and in the image below.
Do you remember??
“Yeah statewide abortions while governor and illegal Alien love and citizenship as president. Definitely need more of that.”
You disapprove of President Reagan and you hate President Trump. Which Republican President of the last hundred years measures up to your standards?
