indentured servants/slaves,

Indentured servants were not slaves.

It was a business deal. Usually it would involve someone paying for the passage of an individual to the new world that would be paid back in exchange for so many years of labor.

I would bet your two ancestors were very happy with the deal especially when they were able to achieve so much here that they never would have been able to achieve in the old country.
