My wife grew up in Soviet dominated Hungry in the late 1950s after the Hungarian revolution. When I first met her we talked about this, and she told me she had fond memories of life inside communist controlled Hungary.

She was very young and I tried to explain to her that it was the turmoil of the revolution that made life difficult for her family.

So when the Soviet tanks rolled in, relief efforts began and life improved. Suddenly groceries stores were stocked and food became available, rebuilding began and jobs opened up, schools were well supplied by the Soviets with teachers and books, and life was indeed better; of course, that is better compared to life among warring factions shooting up population centers.
