One of America’s most popular handguns is allegedly firing on its own, leaving dozens of cops injured: suit

One of America’s most popular guns is a “ticking time bomb” that allegedly fires spontaneously and has injured dozens of cops.

The SIG Sauer P320 semi-automatic handgun is used by some 1,000 law enforcement agencies from the local to the federal level, as well as being a popular civilian purchase.

But its manufacturer is facing a slew of lawsuits alleging that it can fire even when holstered, even when the trigger isn’t pulled, and even when it is just sitting at rest, lawyers allege.

According to the suits against SIG Sauer, some 150 people claim to have suffered injuries, or frightening near misses, when their department-issued P320 went off on its own.

One law enforcement source told The Post, “The P320 isn’t just a gun, it’s a ticking time bomb.”

Holy sh**, reading that made my blood run cold-nothing quite like thinking what if-is there? Since there are other accounts of that happening with that model Remington, I think there is something to it...

My close-to-hand/carry weapon is a .38 special I’ve had for more than 40 years-I have a .357 that was MrT5’s carry weapon-both revolvers, I don’t care for semi-autos-just not comfortable with one as a carry choice...

I like revolvers, and have a bunch of Smiths, most in the prewar to 1969 era. Only had 2 revolver malfunctions in too many years of shooting. One was unburnt grains of powder getting under the extractor star and locking it up (quit using that powder). The other was a pre-1961 Smith ejector rod backing out and locking the gun up (this was a problem on early .44 Magnums, so Smith changed the rod to a left hand thread). But that’s it.

Time to give these cops revolvers. They are too stupid to operate a semi-auto.

And one bullet...

I’ve never picked up a 1911 of any brand that didn’t misfeed and jam the bullet deeper into the case. It may only happen once every few mags, but that’s still unacceptable reliability. 1911s are for dinosaurs. .45 ACP is fat and slow, at 230 grains (generally) moving at around 850 fps and doesn’t expand. Modern not totally crappy 9mm is running like 1200 fps with variable weight, but opens up to about .73 in impact. Velocity kills, not size alone.

Read about this Kimber when it came out but when i actually handled one i knew i had to have it. Best DASA trigger I can imagine. I have a great holster that was made for it as well as a CC vest that holds it nicely.

I too have the Ruger SR9C. That’s my warmer weather EDC.
Nice little pistol.

Unless you’re running a stock Colt or Springfield with 230 grain FMJ, the 1911 is very hard to tune and use reliably.

I do however very much like the round - it thumps like nothing else. Though I’d probably, generally, prefer a G17 as a sidearm.

G21 is on my nightstand.

That’s why I like older Smiths, they were made by folks who had decades of experience. The best guns are depression area ones because they rally went out of their way to do it right. My smoothest is a 1933 M&P target that is only 300 off the serial number McGivern used to set his speed record. The DA trigger is like squeezing soft butter.

Seems like a design flaw

When the problem is a design flaw, people eventually work out what the flaw is. Once it has been identified, the dangerous situation can be recreated, and the design flaw demonstrated. That has not happened with the current SIG.

The Savage 1907 .32 caliber semi auto has a similar problem. Occasionally if you pull the trigger with the safety engaged and then release the safety, some pistols will drop the hammer and fire.

Only happens when there’s some significant wear on the parts. Good news, few people these days carry a Savage 1907 pistol.

The only way a properly maintained 1911 will fire is if the thumb safety is off, the grip safety is activated, and the hammer is cocked. If you had the pistol in a console bouncing around with the thumb safety off...all it would take would something to press against the grip safety and the trigger to snag on something. No pistol (or revolver for that matter) should be tossed into a glove box or center console with a bunch of loose items. Always have it in some kind of holster or pouch.

I carried a 1911 government model quite a while as a duty gun. A plain old GI plain fixed sights, no rails, no tritium sights, just a toych of paint on the front sight. I shoot that 1911 better than any other gun I owned. I only transitioned to a Glock 21 to carry 13 rounds in a magazine vs 7 or 8 rounds in a 1911. I shoot it pretty well. There is just something about .45 ACP.

I still carry an officers model 1911 as an off duty weapon. Lots of my fellow officers carry 1911’s. Some do so with it chambered in 9mm though...

A little search work: Is The Sig Sauer P320 Handgun Safe To Carry, Or Can It Fire On Its Own? » Concealed Carry Inc
Could this be an issue with quality control, where some guns have defective parts? Possibly. In the recent video from Gunghis_Khan, he mentioned he sent the P320 back to Sig to look at. According to Khan, Sig said a KEY POINT “defective firing pin return spring” caused the unexpected discharge.

Split the difference and shoot a .40 with 180GR doing 1000fps.

Or 155 doing 1200fps.

I've never had a 1911 jam/stovepipe/misfeed/misfire. Maybe you're doing it wrong.

I have a S/W .38 SP Airweight Hammerless snub nose, other than the grips being too large it’s hard to conceal, has the light trigger I wanted, and no more hurt hands from trying to rack an automatic. OA is a bummer.

Had to get a custom-made leather pancake holster for a J Frame. Still wants to tilt. We, women, are just built differently than men. I know my holster is American made, by a Retired Train Engineer who has done holsters and knife sheathes for 30 years. And he is not expensive. The ones I looked at were all foreign and not Leather.

You sound like a gun expert. I’m not. But, I think my gun was not a “1911”. I think this because my recollection is that a “1911” is one of the old WW II type .45 autos, which is probably a better gun. Mine was a very late model and probably not older than a couple years (at the time) since it was manufactured. It did have that zero pressure safety on the pistol grip. I remember that clearly. And, I had violated my own rule which was to never keep a round in the chamber. To say the least, God blessed all three of us that day.
