It's really not a hard question. They were doing exactly what Congress & the Senate were doing with impeachment(s), and what the media was doing pumping the (false) Russia-Russia-Russia narrative.
That is, they were working to taint Trump, anyone in his administration, and anyone else associated with him, so as to interfere with his ability to govern and to implement his agenda. These actors just beat the drum, beat the drum, beat the drum - inspiring a visceral hatred for Trump in the Democrat ranks, and ensuring he would get limited public support. In other words, a soft coup.
