WASHINGTON, May 17 (Reuters) - Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis will officially enter the 2024 U.S. presidential race next week, according to two sources familiar with the decision, immediately becoming Donald Trump's biggest rival for the Republican nomination and shaking up a contest that largely has been one-sided.

DeSantis will likely file paperwork declaring his candidacy on May 25 to coincide with a donor meeting in Miami, with a more formal launch the week of May 29, according to a source.

The invitation for the May 25 event stated that donors would be put to “work,” an apparent allusion to raising money for DeSantis, according to a source familiar with the event.

When your that many points behind Trump why bother. Isn’t Trump ahead in Florida also. Unless he figures Trump will be indicted or arrested and won’t be eligible to run.

Unless he figures Trump will be indicted or arrested and won’t be eligible to run.

That's exactly what DeSantos is counting on, and make no mistake- he's already reached out to the Deep State with an offer to assist.

I agree and re-reading my comment, I think I phrased it confusingly. I was referring to all this talk that DeSantis should jump in because Trump might drop out. That won’t happen of course. But if that is DeSantis’ actual, sincere justification, there is no reason for him to join the race right now. If that was his motive, he would wait. But he is a snake.

Does he have a better chance of winning the general election than Trump?

First he has to beat Trump. Every DeSantis supporter ignores this insurmountable obstacle.

Trump embarrassed your R team.
He showed millions of what could be done when the President is America First

Your R team has failed pre Trump..
And many in the R team are already willing to go Post Trump even while he’s running.

That kind of scum deserves the biggest L in history..

Has Ron ever denied the Deep State? No. He has a record about which to speak, which he will predominantly.
I am voting for Ron for the ease with which he handles the press, his record as governor, and his penchant for avoiding spitball fights which step on his message.

I would NEVER vote for Al Stewart, unless the vote was to determine most fascinating musical composer! Heh heh!

No one's ignoring it - whether I vote for Trump or DeSantis in the primaries depends on who I think has a better shot in the general election. Anyone with a brain has to be thinking about winnability in the general election.

To MAGA voters, Trump is an incumbent who was robbed..so this primary is more along the lines of while he was sitting in the White House to them.

If the scum of the R team want to ignore his 4 years and subsequent years since the stolen election, and say it’s time to move on, they’ll get their chance to prove they are a very stupid party to MAGA voters.

A part of me hopes the R team does the stupid thing.

Trump will break records for Write Ins in 2024 in that case.

That’s how much he embarrassed your R team

I say your R team because I don’t belong to that team anymore.

I can only vote for Trump in the General.

He gets my vote regardless of what the stupid party he infiltrated does..

There is no longer a Republican Party without Trump. Only he can restore our greatness and drain the Deep Swamp.

I wouldn't say he infiltrated the party per se- more like amplified and engaged the core philosophies and constitutional values.

He infiltrated the swamp.
Through the R team.

He wasn’t going to get anywhere without playing reindeer games in one of the two swamp parties that co own DC.

My R team??????? Lololol
I AM MAGA who prefers DeSantis. Trump made many great decisions, but he half his picks were dreadful, he supported busting the budget over COVID, and he never pushed Fauxi and Birx to the side.Trump never pushed back against the insane lockdowns, and this helped to lead to mail-in ballots, which in part stole his own election from him. And, these childish attacks and spats on and with nobodies.
But I am not stupid enough to stay home next November if my candidate is not the nominee.

Speaking of the legislature, have they changed the “resign to run” rule that prevents a current officeholder from running for higher office?

Only a fool believes that a different GOP candidate would not receive attacks as mendacious as those on Trump should he become the standard bearer.
Look at those filthy lies against Kavanaugh and Thomas!

Yes, Ron can walk and chew gum AT THE SAME TIME. It was a stupid rule. Don’t you think so?
