Big mistake. DeSantis is still young (he'll be 45 next year). If he waited until 2028 he'd still only be 49. From a game theory perspective, there is no downside and only upside to waiting. If either Biden or Trump is re-elected in 2024 in both cases neither will be eligible to run in 2028 and the field will be wide open. If he played his cards right with unequivocal Trump support now he might even be selected to be Trump's running mate in 2024.

By contrast, if he runs in 2024 and loses, he's damaged goods and vulnerable to charges of "he couldn't even beat Joe Biden" if he tries again in 2028.

The only reason to run in 2024 would be to divide the Republican vote to ensure an easier path for Biden to snooze his way to victory, which would call into question whether he really is his own man or is playing the traditional role of "controlled opposition".

No true MAGA candidate would ever dream of competing with and opposing PDJT. I am glad the ole weasel decided to run now because he exposed himself as the globalists’ trojan horse candidate.

Now this Floridian will never ever vote for DeSatan.

“By contrast, if he runs in 2024 and loses, he’s damaged goods and vulnerable to charges of “he couldn’t even beat Joe Biden” if he tries again in 2028.”

There is no downside for DeSantis to run this election like there wasn’t for Reagan to run in the 1976 primary. It gave Reagan national exposure and set the stage for his 1980 victory.

Even if Trump were to win the nomination and general election in 2024, he’d immediately become a lame duck upon assuming office. Republicans senators ignored Trump for the most part during his first term and they’ll certainly not pay any attention to him in his second using him only as a rubber stamp.

There’s also the possibility that the Trump campaign implodes because of the legal issues he’s facing. DeSantis is clearly the strongest alternative to Trump and with him in the race, he would easily take over if that were to happen. It’s extremely unlikely that Pence or Nikki Haley could pick up the baton and go on to victory in the 2024 general election
