Former NBA star Dwight Howard sparks backlash in China after calling Taiwan a ‘country’

Former NBA player Dwight Howard has become the latest international sports star to be caught in the crosshairs of Chinese nationalist wrath after he referred to Taiwan as a “country” in a promotional video alongside the democratic island’s vice president.

The 37-year-old eight-time NBA All-Star has enjoyed huge popularity in Taiwan since joining its professional team Taoyuan Leopards from the Los Angeles Lakers in November last year.

“Since I came to Taiwan, I’ve gained a whole new appreciation of this country. This place makes me feel so much love,” Howard said in a two-minute online video.

Taiwan is a self-ruled democracy with its own military, currency, constitution and elected government, although it is not officially recognized as an independent country by most governments in the world.

China’s ruling Communist Party claims Taiwan as its own territory, despite having never controlled it, and has refused to rule out the use of force to “unify” the island with mainland China.

Good for him.

Although, he apparently does get involved in the occasional brouhaha.

It appears that a hockey game almost broke out.

Before he spoke he should have reviewed what all of us here know already: /S

Administratively, China is divided into

23 provinces,
5 autonomous regions (Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Tibet, Ningxia, Xinjiang),
4 municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chongqing)
and 2 Special Administrative Regions (Hong Kong, Macao).

Since the unofficial end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, China has considered Taiwan to be a rebel region that must be reunited with the mainland. China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, espousing what is known as the “One-China policy”.

Years ago I moved to California from the Midwest. I was hanging out at the pool in my apartment complex and was chatting with a young lady when she asked where I was from.

“Omaha”, I replied.

“Omaha!” She gasped. “I haaate the East Coast!”

“Yes” I said. “A lot of people do.”

Geography anyone?

Well, maybe. Let’s see if he walks back - or “clarifies” - his statement in the next few days. If he sticks to his original remarks, then hell yeah good for him.

The junta in Beijing is not the legitimate government of China ... the government in exile in Taipei is.

Most would consider his NBA career as unfulfillled. He had all the natural talent in the world. Still he played on many many teams. And I’m glad to hear he’s still playing somewhere.

“China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, espousing what is known as the “One-China policy”.”

And Taiwan claims they are the legitimate government over mainland China.

Maybe they are; mainland China has not exactly had free and fair elections. They are a corrupt dictatorship. Ruthless too.

Red China is not our friend although Kissinger has tried to convince us otherwise.

Come on people! Don’t you think they should learn how to fight first?
Taiwan is not Israel. They’re not even Ukraine. They do have a window to get tough fast. Will they take it? Korea has. Japan knows we have their back. Just look at the military obligation Taiwan males have.

That is exactly what I have always maintained.

The psychos overthrew the government, but the government escaped to Taiwan.

Taiwan is the only legitimate China.

Right on. We should return to the old policy of recognizing the government on Taiwan as the legitimate government of China.
