"...but it mostly works as advertised."

Until it snows, and all the cues it uses vanish... Just a light dusting, or leaves, or dirt on the road, or some minor error with the GPS mapping...
It's like trusting Helen Keller. Remember the old joke about how her parents used to punish her by moving the furniture?

Samie same.

There was a fatal crash a few years ago iirc in Florida - the car didn’t see a stop sign due to an overgrown tree. It was a small neighborhood road intersecting with the larger boulevard and just drove straight past. The white line at stop signs was there, but the car didn’t notice the line or see the red octagon.

I’ve heard there is more technology now... and I am sure it will only get better in time. We can’t expect it will be perfect...

... But one day, not too distant future, you won’t need to own a car or even use an Uber. You just dial up and a car drives itself to you, takes you to your destination then goes on to another location to pick up another passenger etc. Repeat all day or all charge. There are other issues with that e.g. disease spreading, cleanliness etc. But it’s a possible future. The car could make scheduled stops for cleaning and charging, or even have sensors and cameras to check for cleanliness.
