During the outbreak of Yellow Fever at Fort Jefferson, when the prison doctor died of the disease, Dr. Samuel Mudd, who had been convicted for his alleged role in the assassination of President Lincoln, took over that position, and helped stem the disease. He was eventually pardoned in 1869 by President Johnson, for his work at the Fort. Michael O’Laughlen, who had also been convicted for being involved in the assassination conspiracy, died of Yellow Fever while imprisoned at Fort Jefferson.
