Russia has control of all the access points to the pipeline.
Being they controlled the access, they could have easily sent what’s called a “pig” loaded with explosives down the line.
Politically it makes perfect sense since Russia had the most to gain.
After the sanctions were levied, Putin wanted to shut the gas off to the European countries that joined in on the sanctions. If he were to simply shut the valves, it would have made an already bad political situation worse. But by blowing up the pipeline and having his paid mouthpieces blame the United States, all of his objectives are met.
1.) He cuts gas off to the European countries supporting the sanctions, thus crippling their economies.
2.) He’s able to pin the blame on America by using usefully idiots like Seymour Hersh and the rest of the Hate America/Blame America First crowd who has since run with the story.
3.) Putin comes off looking clean.
As an added bonus, by blaming America, he starts to fracture the NATO alliance by sowing distrust.
