Lake Mead has been siphoned down to a puddle and they are sucking up the dregs to use as drinking water. I would conjecture that there may be higher concentrations of parasites and some of the water is not being filtered completely.
Could be, I was thinking hot springs in the area and their parasites. I read you should never submerge your head due to possible infection.
