NAACP sues after Mississippi expands control over law enforcement in Jackson

The NAACP sued Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves after he signed legislation that allows state authorities to exert more control over law enforcement in Jackson, including by expanding the Capitol Police, which shot four people last year without much public explanation.

The lawsuit, which was e-filed Friday evening in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi, accuses Reeves and other state officials of unfairly singling out Jackson, a predominantly Black city struggling with violent crime and an overburdened court system.

The bills Reeves signed Friday create a temporary court system outside city control to be run by appointed judges and prosecutors who will handle cases brought to them by the Capitol Police, a once-obscure agency that has been given power to patrol the capital.

Those moves strip Jackson residents of their voting power and muffle their voice in how justice is administered in the city by sidestepping Mississippi’s existing system in which voters elected their judges and their mayors, who appointed their police chiefs, NAACP officials said.

They cited as an example Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba’s 2020 order changing the Jackson Police Department’s use-of-force policy, which bans chokeholds, mandates de-escalation techniques and requires officers to intervene if they see another officer using unnecessary force. The Capitol Police, which hasn’t publicly updated its use-of-force policy since 2006, is part of the state Department of Public Safety and isn’t subject to city policies.

So, the gov of Miss is taking over—somewhat—the Jackson PD. Even brining in judges and courts. Interesting.

Where the hell is the NAACP getting it’s standing? This should be thrown out immediately like it’s just another GOP lawsuit.

Good question. What sort of entity is the NAACP, legally speaking? Are they a lobbying organization, a pressure group, an association speaking out for certain causes? Legally I wonder how they have standing to sue.

How bad is it in Jackson, that the state wants to intervene?

Hey, we have to do something so when our bros break the law they are released under their own recognizance.

Proof positive that black Democrats can’t run a lemonade stand. Every municipality they run turns into complete lawlessness and corruption, while black pressure groups blame Whitey. I’m just so sick of this. I’m beginning to think George Wallace was right after all.

Yup! At least the state is trying to do something about crime. They’re even willing to engage the NAACP criminals to fight it.

Standing?
Hell, this is a slam dunk win for the NAACP. You seriously cannot think the NCAAP will lose any lawsuit against a white public official in Mississippi?

Not if it gets out that Trump put the NAACP up to suing.

So, the NAACP is suing for more lawlessness.

“..How bad is it in Jackson...”

Bad enough that we only pass thru there during broad daylight hours, utilizing the middle lane of the interstate, moving with the flow of traffic, head on a swivil, armed to the teeth with a weapon in our lap loaded and ready for immediate use.

Almost all businesses moved out of downtown Jackson more than 30 years ago due to the lawlessness.

Given that the state capitol is there, the GOP has little choice but to step in, due to the gross incompetence/negligence of the local White-hating Marxist officeholders. Frankly, I’m surprised Republicans haven’t raised the issue of moving the capital entirely out of Jackson due to obvious safety issues.

The problem this addresses is the racist, segregationist mayor’s refusal to enforce the laws. Crime is ignored by he and his racist administration.

Like in Texas. DPS state troopers taking up the slack in Austin, over the steadily dwindling number of PD officers available. Have heard crime has taken a drop in some areas - those troopers don't mess around. They may coordinate with the city and PD but don't answer to them.
