And my understanding of the “actual malice” standard is that if you’re going to publish/broadcast the claims made by other people you cannot disregard whether or not said claims are true.

Well that can't be right, because if that was true, all the mainstream media lie machines would have been sued out of business.

Not really.

Historically, it has been VERY difficult to PROVE that a party has acted with disregard to the truth.

This particular case seems to be quite the exception.
