The leader of an online group behind suspected US military document leaks is national guardsman Jack Teixeira, officials have told NBC News.
Teixeira, 21, is said to have overseen a private online group, containing around 30 people, in which the leaked documents were shared.
He is a member of the intelligence wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The New York Times.
Officials told Sky News' US partner network, NBC News, that they have been on to him for some time and that an arrest is imminent.
While their accuracy has been questioned, the leaked documents appear to reveal potential vulnerabilities in Ukraine's defences, as well as the numbers of UK special forces allegedly active in the country.
Known as "OG" in the Discord chatroom, the suspect behind the leaks allegedly claimed to spend parts of his day inside a secure facility where phones were banned, according to a story published by the Washington Post.

It’s very simple. When you are a member of the U.S. military, you have a duty to not follow illegal orders.
If you are ordered to conceal crimes, your duty is to not conceal those crimes.
What is puzzling is that you bring that up in regard to this traitor.
You seem confused about not being a traitor and releasing military secrets, it is illegal.
If anyone actually believes this 21 year old E2/E3 Air National Guardsman had access to these documents and wasn’t either completely set up or asked to do this by someone in Intel, the I have some ocean front property to sell you in AZ.
He was either set up, framed or had some kind of assistance. An E2/E3 National Guardsman did not have access to internal TS CIA docs. Just because you have a clearance doesn’t mean you get to see everything classified at that level.
I am guessing, that, if you are a member of the U.S. DoD or otherwise have a security clearance (such as being a member of a “think tank” that works with the DoD - RAND for example), and you come across government intel and/or classified documents that you reasonably believe are not safely, securely, stored, then you may be under some legal obligation to both:
- make an effort to secure such documents
- report your findings
instead of sharing such documents to people, about whom, you are uncertain of their documents security status.
Something like that.
The young man, Jack Teixeira, in addition to probably some others who play games and use Discord, has run afoul of somebody in government, who will make an example case of him and his profile (broadcast in news media headlines).
In addition, Jack Teixeira is a casualty of the online war between so many opposing forces.
“how does a 21 one year old kid in the national guard get ahold of top secret documents”.
He didn’t. It’s a set up.
And he would definitely not have access to internal CIA memos/documents as reported.
It IS a set up.
“Witness said he loved God, shooting guns, and cars”.
They’re portraying him as a Right Winger. No surprise there. It is a set up.
That’s right. This 21 year old no stripe airman is a set up.
“Leavenworth in that kid’s future.”
30 years would get his attention though he deserves a firing squad!
Leaking classified information to score points in online debates. Now I’ve heard everything. What an idiot!
If there is a silver lining, we did find out that the executive branch is bypassing the legislative branch of our government, and they are lying to WE the people.
“Biden says the Pentagon leak is not a big deal!”
