Scientists find "unprecedented" rates of sea level rise along some U.S. coasts that's 3 times higher than global average

Sea level rise has long been expected to be an ongoing and worsening problem for U.S. coasts, but scientists have found that some areas are experiencing "unprecedented" levels of rising seas, raising concerns about the fate of already vulnerable communities.

A new study published in Nature Communications on Monday found that since 2010, sea level rise along the nation's Southeast and Gulf coasts has ramped up dramatically, hitting rates that are "unprecedented in at least 120 years." Since 2010, scientists from Tulane University have found that sea levels in those regions have increased by about half an inch every year.

"These rapid rates are unprecedented over at least the 20th century and they have been three times higher than the global average over the same period," said Tulane professor Sönke Dangendorf, who led the study.

Numerous factors play a role in this sea level rise, scientists found, including those that are both natural and human-made. Study co-author Noah Hendricks said that they looked at those causes, including vertical land motion, ice-mass loss and air pressure, but that "none of them could sufficiently explain" the rampant rise.

yep, total and complete BS

Beach erosion is NOT the same thing as sea level rise.

environmental scientists are NOT scientists, they are nuts who chain themselves to trees on the weekends and then create models to show what they want to show.

hurricanes and nor’easters cause major erosion of sandy shorelines. Erosion will appear as sea rise to people who don’t live in the affected area.

Fluid Mechanics, how does it work!?

Not the way this Lysenko “scientist” thinks it does, that’s for sure.

How’s all that ice melt ending up in the Gulf?

Too many mixed drinks in the “Redneck Rivera”?

Then move the fuck inland, dumb shits! I surveyed my property for the building of my home. The payment at my first step is 371 feet above sea level. I’m safe, thankfully to my to my wife’s parents who “stranded” us on the Tar River. Tee-Hee.

Earth is moving 390 miles per second through the heavens, plus or minus 50,000 mph depending on the cosmic tides. Some sloshing may occur.

Note the “rock” is not the same size it was in 1620.

It had been chipped away for centuries until it was closed off some years ago.

They’re just flat-out lying. Look at photos of Liberty Island, upon which the Statue of Liberty sits, from the late 1800s, when the statue was installed, and compare them to photos from today. That island sits very low, only a few feet above the water in New York harbor. If you compare, you will see that there has been ZERO water level rise since the late 1800s. It’s obvious there because the island has been photographed many times and is such a clear indicator of water level.

And how many low-lying islands around the world were supposed to be completely under water by now, and yet they are all still there.

I’m pretty sure it’s because Americans have more guns than anyone else. Maybe I wouldn’t know that if I didn’t read so many social media comments.

I will bet it isn’t the sea level rising.

IT is the land sinking

Oh come on, haven’t you ever had a glass of water where the water was higher on one side of the glass than the other side?

How is sea level rise different in different places?

Here are 3 casues.

1) Often it is perception of sea level change, when it is really the land is rising or falling. In the Baltic sea region, the land has been rising for centuries, due to recovery from land sinkage caused by the weight of glaciers. In the Houstan area it has been dropping for 100 years, probably because theyve pumped out a lot of water and oil from the ground and the land subsides.

2) If the salinity in the region is dropping, perhaps due to changes in river water flows, the water gets lighter and the water level will rise, . Or if the water temperature in the region is rising, the water gets lighter and the sea lelvel will rise.

3) If offshore current are slowing, (This is happening in the Gulf Stream off of the US East Coast) the sea lavel on the nearby shore will rise due to reduced Corriolis effect. This can be a major effect.

Hope that helps.

I think these are tidal changes. or just plain erosion. I know there are differences in sea levels all around but the sea doesn’t really rise in one place. For the scare quotes to work it think they need to say it is rising everywhere. And i would like New Jersey to disappear. It would be nice to have beach front property for a while.
