Good point. A troubled, unhappy, confused and broken person imagines the “miracles of medicine” can change him or her into a whole and happy and healthy new person — into someone else entirely, someone of the opposite sex even. Only it can’t. You’re still the same troubled, unhappy, confused person you were before, now perhaps with a mutilated body and/or a body trying to deal with unnatural hormones.
A young woman on the autism spectrum who has an emotional disorder, as Audrey reportedly was, is given to believe “what is really going on with you is you are trans, trapped in a body of the wrong sex, and we can fix that”. One can see why these troubled people fall for that. Autism can’t be fixed, and emotional disorders are hard to treat. Besides, trans is the cool “in” thing now, far more socially acceptable than an emotional disorder.
