Why does it always seem to take a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun? Is it just me? Because if no one else has a gun, then *nobody* with a gun will be able stop a bad guy with a gun.
If the good guys have their guns confiscated, the bad guy is free to do as he pleases and slaughter as many people has he has ammo for.
