The idea that public transportation only has ever worked in safe homogenous, high trust societies like the former Scandinavia and Japan.
There's a reason why car ownership is actually increasing in a lot of Europe and that isn't because it's cheaper or more accessible. It's because they gotta lotta new neighbors aint no one in their right mind wants to or feels safe enough to share in the pleasure of a subway or bus ride.
