EV’s are a solution looking for a problem.

Jesus said to love and bless our enemies. God bless you. And the Dims. And all other enemies of freedom like you and the Dims.

I'll never understand people like you who insist it has to all be either one way (to you everybody has to drive ICE cars) or the other (Dims say everybody has to drive EV's). I'm happy to have one of each to be best suited for each day's varying transportation needs.

Think of what I've got going on as being an energy prepper to best insulate my family from the Dims' stupid war on energy.

I am thinking of getting vanity plates and I am stuck on two choices:

"N0EV4ME" or "ICE4EVR".

I can't decide which is better.

Why don’t you take your home charger and stuff it up your ——. Keep our Lord out of it.

You're as mad as the EV owners I sometimes meet if we take the EV on a trip, stop at a charger, and meet other EV owners during the 10 or minutes the EV is charging.

I wish I had a dollar for every one of them who thanked me for "doing your part to stop global warming". LOL
I almost always show them this graph and tell them I'm not religious enough to be freaked out over warming. They usually talk like I'm some kind of traitor to their cult cause. LOL

I like that the chart has “extent of thermometer record” that always gets overlooked or left out.

Exactly! In the past 10 or so years we've had some slight cooling. I often literally laugh out loud when someone says global temps are highest on record. LOL

IMHO, the recent brief cooling is not indicative of the topping of the Modern Warm Period. If you look up expanded versions of the warm and cool periods over the past 3,500 years you'd see that each of them have brief hiccups. (I.e. The Little Ice Age cooling period from about AD 1300 to 1800's had a brief 50 or so years of warming from about AD 1470 to 1520, then resumed cooling.)

So I think we still have 2 to 4 centuries of the Modern Warm Period left, assuming it'll last a total of 4 to 6 centuries like the past few warming periods did. After that it'll top off and enter yet another cooling period.

But here in Alabama where the grid rarely goes down and where I get good free power from solar, charging an EV is easy-breezy.

We live in the foothills of the Cascade mountains in the middle of a bunch of tall fir trees. I cut down 23 120 footers a couple years ago but we are still in the shade most of the time. It drizzles all winter long, with usually a couple wind and rain storms a month, along with a little snow. Our power goes out frequently mostly from trees and large branches falling on the power lines. Everyone in our neighborhood has a generator. We have 156 sunny days a year on average at our location.

Our local property tax rate is several times higher than most places in Alabama. Our local and state government officials and our judicial branch are all solid red. My wife and I want to move. Alabama is currently our favorite option. We look at Zillow every night hoping to find the best place to purchase after we sell our houses here. Do you have any advice or warnings for us.

That Tesla wall connector does 11.5 kW / 48 amp. That’s a lot of juice.

https://www.tesla.com/support/home-charging-installation/wall-connector

If every home on my block had one, they would have to completely upgrade the power infrastructure.

Our current infrastructure cannot support more than about one or two EVs per block.

Alabama and other conservative states are good for living. Here are my tips:

1. Find a small town in the middle of nowhere. Even red states have Dim control-freaks in most of the big cities (even what we call "big cities" in Alabama LOL). For example, I bet there are rural areas of California (a Dim state) that have less local regulations and crime than Miami, FL (a conservative state). Huntsville, AL is an exception -- it's our biggest city and from what I hear about as nice a place to live that's not out in the boonies. But that might be because Huntsville has the highest engineer-to-worker ratio of all cities in America (think geeks, not freaks). So whatever state you move to, I'd probably stay away from big cities unless it's Huntsville.

2. If you're older or for some reason need access to good healthcare, it's hard to beat Birmingham, AL. Again, as per rule #1 I wouldn't live in the city limits or maybe 10 miles from it. I live about 18 miles west of it in a tiny suburban town that's so small my town has only 1 traffic light: a flashing caution light, and we share one post office with 5 other small towns. My property tax is about $1K per year in a home that's worth about $300K (not counting whatever extra value I added to my house with solar and other energy improvements). Probably most home values range from $200K to $400K. It's very much a middle-class area good for families and retired folks.

3. The white sandy beaches in the Gulf Shores, AL area are 2nd to none. To be honest, there's not a good size city for things like a major hospital and such. So if you're of the age to need frequent medical care, that might not be good. And life right there on the gulf coast can get rough from drunk tourists and spring breakers. But there are a lot of good places 20 miles from the gulf if frequent walks on the beach are your thing.

4. As far as cost of living goes, in Alabama it's probably hard to beat where I live 20 miles west of Birmingham. 20 miles east is the high dollar area if, for example, you want a gated community type area and best public schools for your kids. To be honest, my low cost of living tiny town is about 10 miles from a fairly high crime area, but it's never been a problem where I live.

5. If you are friendly with blacks, Birmingham is a good place to be as long as you stay away from the rough areas. My church meets within the city limits of Birmingham in a low-income area, is about 70% black, and is about half middle-class black married couples living outside of town like I do. We all attend that church in part to be an example to the poor 50% or so of the people in the church. No blame-the-whitey racist talk comes from the pulpit and rarely is brought up in conversation because the middle-class married blacks set the standard of civility for the lower-class blacks to follow. Whenever one of the newbies in our church bring up that racist mess, before I have a chance to say anything one of the middle-class blacks shouts him or her down and says that our church is too into loving God and loving people to have room for that racist mess. I'm always greeted warmly and invited to hang outs with the other men, even during the 2020 political year of race riots. And white liberals don't attend the church stirring up mess -- they attend the lily white "progressive" churches. I wish I had a dollar for every black friend in church who walked up to me in year 2020 and told me, "George Floyd ain't my hero." There are various other social places where the races mix well, like Top Golf and such. My tiny neighborhood is about 10% black. When my kids were young all of our kids hung out together and spent the night with each other. My black neighbor across the street and I text each other when we see the delivery man deliver a package on the other's front porch and know the neighbor is out of town. In the late afternoons when outside I hear the cheers from the little league ball field full of families cheering on their kids, nobody seeming to care about the racial mix. From what I hear virtually every tiny town outside of Birmingham is like this if the houses sell for at least $200K. To be honest, it's not that idyllic in the areas where the houses cost less than $100K. Those lower income areas have tons of crime and an overall bad attitude.

6. Pick a tiny town where about 70% of the land area is either undeveloped wooded area or farm land. Basically we're pretty spread out. In my tiny town there are many pockets of subdivisions with about 30 homes, each with 1/2 an acre to 1.5 acres and many dead end streets with about 6 houses per street, then a large patch of woods or pasture land separating the next cluster of 30 or so homes. In these clusters of homes we get to know our neighbors, but we're spread out enough where we don't feel like we're on top of each other and getting in each other's business.

"And of course leaving lithium rechargeable batteries in a discharged state for an extended period will degrade them faster than leaving them fully charged. But even worse if they are somehow discharged to less than 3.2 volts per cell they will be permanently damaged and likely destroyed."

The LiFePo4 cells both in my e-MTB and starting battery for motorcycle can go way lower than that.

"At the other end of the scale, over-discharging can also cause cell damage. The BMS must disconnect the load if any cells are approaching empty (less than 2.5V). Cells may suffer mild damage below 2.0V, but are usually recoverable. However, cells which get driven to negative voltages are damaged beyond recovery."

BTW, I use an Imax-type B6AC 80w charger for hobby use. You can spend a lot more but this seems more than adequate. Slightly different from photo. What do you use?

I have collected a number of chargers over the years, but it is really hard to beat an Imax B6 type. It takes a little bit of time to get used to the menu system when you are new to them, but they give a lot of control and are extremely versatile. This is especially true when you use them with a parallel charging board.

I just came in from half an hour of flying my 8 year old big old Syma X8W around our approximately 1 acre lot. I have other drones with GPS and high-definition cameras but sometimes it is much more fun to just get back to the complete basics with no altitude hold and enough mass that you have to pay attention to your trajectory. But it was kind of funny to open up the computer and see a very similar charger to the one I had just hooked my batteries up to moments before.

It is actually hard to find an inexpensive drone that does not have altitude hold and a video game style controller. I have some of these as well and I like them for their simplicity and ease of flying especially when coaching the grand-kids. But I encourage them to fly my little Syma X5SW Explorer which can use the same controller as the old X8W. This actually does a better job of increasing their skill level and it is so light that it is nearly indestructible.

The LiFePo4 cells both in my e-MTB and starting battery for motorcycle can go way lower than that.

LiFePo4 cells have lower working voltages and lower energy density. Since they are safer, more durable and are less sensitive to temperature extremes they are being used in more electric vehicles. But the same basic principles apply and they have some of their own disadvantages.

I built up my own electric bicycle from a Walmart mountain bike and a 750 watt hub motor and controller from Ebay. I used lead acid gel cells because they were so much cheaper and the extra weight did not cause a problem. It had about 30 miles of range and could cruise at about 30 mph. The problem was that it didn't have very good torque when going over a steep hill. If you let it slow down it wasn't much help getting started again. This was partially because the cheap gel cells were not capable of putting out as much amperage more expensive batteries. I sold it for quite a bit more than I had into it and gained some insight into what I would do differently the next time around.

“EV owners should have gas-powered generators mounted on trailers for towing on long trips.”

Or tow a second battery that is wired to the primary battery. This would work on level terrain.
