Trump allies say DeSantis running illegal ‘shadow campaign’ for president

President Donald Trump took his attacks on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to a new level Wednesday, as a super PAC linked to the 76-year-old accused his would-be rival of ethics violations tied to what it calls DeSantis’ “shadow presidential campaign.”

A draft of the 15-page letter by Make America Great Again Inc. calls on the Florida Commission on Ethics to investigate DeSantis, alleging that the 44-year-old has violated a slew of state statutes as well as federal campaign finance laws.

The complaint refers to DeSantis as a “de facto candidate for president” and claims that the governor is “leveraging his elected office and breaching his associated duties in a coordinated effort to develop his national profile, enrich himself and his political allies, and influence the national electorate.”

“Governor DeSantis’ failure to declare his candidacy is no mere oversight,” the complaint alleged. “[I]t is a coordinated effort to specifically designed for him to accept, as unethical gifts, illegal campaign contributions and certain personal benefits that are necessarily intended to influence his official decision to resign from office under Florida’s resign to run law.

“Governor DeSantis’ ham-handed maneuverings,” the complaint added, “have rendered him irreparably conflicted and have left the statehouse vacant.”

The letter includes as evidence that DeSantis has “abused his office and abdicated his official duties in favor of pursuing his national political interests” the fact that the governor has “met with influential figures in early primary states,” “is vetting operatives in early primary states,” and “met with individuals who are likely to play key roles in his presidential campaign.”

The letter asks that the commission impose one or more penalties including impeachment, removal from office, public censure, ballot disqualification and fines.

Trump should stop personal attacks and run on what he will do and his past successes.

Not to nitpick, because you’re VERY correct that DeSantis doesn’t need to resign now, but he does need to resign from the governorship to be ELIGIBLE for election to the White House. I’ve been interpreting that as he should resign in order to accept the nomination. Arguably, he could resign before Election Day, but the political context of the Statute seems to argue that he must resign to accept the nominee. Ignoring that context, I suppose you COULD argue that since the Electoral College elects him, he doesn’t have to resign until AFTER election day.

What you mean is that it began when Trump attacked the Republican nominee, that nominee responded in kind

Trump trashed O'Dea before O'Dea went on Big Media and trashed Trump.

Do you have a link to that earlier trashing?

You left off the first step. 1) ODea went on CNN and attacked Trump and vowed to stop Trump and MAGA. 2) Trump responded. 3) Days later, DeSantis endorses Odea.

What if you knew Karl Rove, Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell etc helped steal the Presidency from you and are now fully backing with $200 million so far and the Fox News brand, DeSantis against you? President Trump deserves a second chance. Ronnie can wait his turn. If he if he has one after these tricks.

>> Perhaps you read the law differently but it does not have to be a public office. Once he declares or officially files for the Primary, he has to resign if the law is not changed by that time. <<

No, it PRECISELY says it must be a public office.

(2) No person may qualify as a candidate FOR MORE THAN ONE PUBLIC OFFICE, whether federal, state, district, county, or municipal, if the terms or any part thereof run concurrently with each other.
(3)(a) No officer may qualify as a candidate for another state, district, county, or municipal PUBLIC OFFICE if the terms or any part thereof run concurrently with each other without resigning from the office he or she presently holds.

There is no mention anywhere of a nomination.

***

Trump is just not smart enough to figure that out, which is why Pelosi was able to easily out-smart him in so many ways.

He walked right into her hands on Jan. 6.

DeSantis will also out-smart him.

Yes, that's how I remember it.

DeSantis is playing games. Trying to run for President and stay governor of Florida which is specifically against Florida law. He’s acting like another cheap tricks politician, scheming and plotting, or worse yet, weak and indecisive. DeSantis is just burning bridges.

Before you post such a question you might want to start with the online influences supporting DeSantis, and other assorted trolls about their obvious behavior of constantly lying about President Trump and his accomplishments.

When you start doing that, I will have more confidence in your objectivity.

WAIT A MINUTE!!!!

I just noticed that “federal” is missing from the list of offices in (3)(a)! Contrary to news reports at the time, there is NO reason he can’t run for president while serving as Governor. In fact, he could even BE governor and President at the same time, as unwise as that would be. He can’t run for CONGRESS and the presidency at the same time because those offices are concurrent and the elections are simultaneous. But this utterly doesn’t apply to DeSantis.

Because he’s trying to get new laws passed in Florida, one is Constitutional Carry, the other is open carry, Florida has a huge budget surplus how that is handled will be a campaign issue in the primary and general election should DeSantis win the nomination, besides another month or two is not going to matter, him getting some legislative accomplishments that he can brag about will only help.

Trump, with all his flaws, is proven swamp free.

Putting Wray in as FBI Director.

Endorsing McDaniel as GOP Chair

Endorsing McCarthy for Speaker

Inserting himself into Pennsylvania politics, pushing horrible candidates that all lost, resulting in near total Democrat control of the commonwealth.

Empowering Fauci

Giving Big Pharma blanket immunity

Spending trillions on Covid relief that started the current inflation

Failing to finish the wall

Not firing Gen Milley after lying to him about Syria, his behavior after St John's Church was burned.

Trump is Deep State

OK, I only caught the back-and-forth when Trump attacked O’Dea. Frankly, I respected Trump’s attack MORE when I thought it was over O’Dea being socially center-left. Turns out, as always, it’s always all about Trump.

When asked whether he approved of Trump’s then-fairly-recent behavior, O’Dea said he would endorse a Republican other than Trump, and actively support that other candidate, faulting Trump’s handling of January 6. But O’Dea also said he would support Trump in the general election.

Trump, OTOH, urged O’Dea’s defeat, EFFECTIVELY ENDORSING THE DEMOCRAT!!!!!
