I think the point is that our current copyright law is absolutely insane, and jz638 is absolutely correct about that. Copyright should return to something like what the founders would recognise. 14 years terms with a one-time renewal possible, for a total of 28 years. Heck, I'd even be tempted to throw them a bone and say they could have 2 renewals, if they had to pay $100 for each work that is renewed. Starting from the 60s, copyright has become effectively eternal for the most part. Anything that was published in the 20th century should, by now, be in the public domain.The only reason it is not, is because corporation own our government lock, stock, and barrel.
