This “lost treasure” has hoax written all over it.
1)the army wouldn’t lost a shipment of gold this large and not make a huge amount of paperwork.
2) some sources say it was a gold bars shipment yet also say it was a payroll shipment. Who gets paid in gold bars? Not even Grant got that kind of payment.
3)nobody ever went back and dug up the treasure? Riiiiiight.
4) anyone who’s ever deal with the IRS knows the government never forgets, especially this reported amount of money.
Hoax, pure and simple.
A hoax? No. I could be wrong. But I seem to remember reading that the Union paymaster was shifty guy named Archibald Biden. So, yeah. I think something really did happen to all the gold.
