Here is the relevant phrase in the story: “....after he hijacked a car and hit into the officers’ squad vehicle...”
I assume they had no idea of his age at the time he did the hijacking, etc. If you do adult sized crimes, expect an appropriate response by cops prior to their checking your age.
They also were responding to a “shots fired” call, so they had no idea of what to expect when the ‘perp’ plowed into their patrol car. Had they waited, more than likely they would be dead. But, as usual, the authors leave out so many facts it is impossible to assess the truth of the shooting and whether it was justified or not.

A five year old with a pistol can kill just effectively as an adult.
I don’t think the assailant’s age matters. He was attacking withe two deadly weapons, a gun and a vehicle. The officer shouldn’t let himself be killed just because the attacker is young.
Pure sensationalism. That's like a headline that reads; "Man robbed and killed for 45 cents."
The robber was hoping he had hundreds or thousands of dollars on him. If he knew he only had 45 cents he would have chosen a different victim.
