Kentucky Firefighters Find First Infant in Recently Installed ‘Baby Box’

Firefighters in Bowling Green, Kentucky, last week found the first baby placed into their Safe Haven Baby Box, which was just installed in December.

WBKO reported that an infant was left in the Safe Haven Baby Box at the Bowling Green Fire Department (BGFD) station on Lovers Lane.

The firefighters retrieved the child just a minute and a half after the box was used, WNKY noted.

Monika Kelsey, the founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, held a press conference. Addressing the parents of the baby, she thanked the parents for looking out for the best interests of their child.

Kentucky’s “Safe Infants Act allows parents to leave babies younger than 30 days old at a designated safe place. No one will call the police or ask for your name,” Kentucky’s Health and Family Services website says.

Is this a good idea? Encouraging the abandonment of babies?

🤔

It is if the alternative is a dumpster or being thrown off the Tallahassee Bridge.

while I don’t think it’s the best answer, it is a current help and also an enablement.

best would be to have less people create a child unless they are committed to raising it too, but we know other situations happen that can lead to pregnancy too.

It is encouraging the survival of babies. Definitely a good idea.

Foundlings have always been a thing and the number of them hasn’t soared because abandonment was encouraged. If anything, this is a safe, private, and healthier action than some of the horrific alternatives.

Deceitful!

No "fathers" were involved in this!

No "family conference" was first held to discuss this!

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a 15 year-old teenager.

Fathers, as I understand it, often pressure for abortion, and occasionally pressure the other way.

Once a child is on the scene, encouraging all parties to consider this if appropriate is a good thing.

The action may not seem very parental, but is much more parental than klling the child.

As an older sibling to four foreign-adopted children, I applaud. Believing we are more civilized because we normally kill our children brings us back to Moloch.

Is the box big enough to fit Brandon in there? Immediate diaper change would be required.

I don't dispute any of your statements.

I merely find it irritating that even here, in this article, someone (the author) felt it necessary to promote a certain agenda.

I very much doubt that many of the women placing their children into this "Baby Box" did so on the basis of a mutual, serious agreement with the fathers. Speaking of "parents" supports the deceitful talking-point that, indeed, both parents were involved and agreed to this serious decision. In actual fact, I am quite sure that the vast majority of the women were acting in desperation, without any "father" in sight.

I don't know. "Baby Box"? Sounds like a John Malkovich movie.

I agree with your analysis of the desperation. In many cases the father is not in sight-—but in many other cases, both here and with abortion, the father contributes to the desperation.

However, in writing about a situation where facts are largely lacking, I think there is a point in defaulting to the ideal, however unlikely it is. This is in some ways the opposite of such monstrosities as “His husband” or “her wife.”

If all parties involved are aware of “parental” options other than abortion, I think the father might both stick around more often, be drawn into the decision more often, and be constructively involved.

I agree that paternal involvement here was highly unlikely, and that the maternal involvement was not ideal, but writing the article to encourage society to move from awful to somewhat less awful, in this case, is something that I applaud.

With mutual regard.

“Encouraging the abandonment of babies?”

Well, it beats the Hell out of the alternative.
As I said when this was posted last week;
I pray the child lives a long & successful life and God bless the mother for not using the government approved method of terminating a pregnancy.

It’s a great idea...and much better than being sliced & diced in the womb. Don’t you agree?

Wouldn’t there be a corresponding (but as-yet unconnected) investigation by police initiated by someone who knows that a particular woman was pregnant and gave birth to a live child, but now is unexplainedly found without the newborn?

"...but now is unexplainedly found without the newborn..."

My sense is the promise of "safe passage" for the infant and the promise of "no prosecution" for the parents increases likelihood the innocent baby will not just simply be killed and tossed into the garbage.
