It is horrible. The other horror is when they begin with "I mean." If it's the first thing you say, you haven't meant anything!!
Give me an old-fashioned "well" or even an "uh."
While I'm at it, "said" and "thought" have been replaced with "am/are/is like." And upspeak. "She said two plus two is four? and I'm like, that's your truth? I mean, some people? they're like, it's five?"
Even Tucker Carlson talks this way. I appreciate his thoughts (usually) but the delivery makes me wince.
