A slightly different story emerged in the Washington Post, which reported that the Pentagon knew of "past Chinese surveillance balloons near Florida and Texas." Wait a minute: Near Florida and Texas? What does near mean? Were the balloons over those states? Were they offshore but over U.S. territorial waters? The Washington Post suggested the Pentagon was not being entirely clear. "The Defense Department was not specific about where in each state the previous incursions occurred," the paper reported, citing Rep. Michael Waltz, a Republican on the House Armed Services Committee. "[Waltz] added that officials did not say whether the balloons made it into U.S. airspace, which extends 12 nautical miles from the shore, or over U.S. territory, too." That's an important distinction, isn't it? Were the previously undiscovered balloons over U.S. territory or not?
At this point, nothing is clear. In a text exchange, one Capitol Hill Republican, eager to question the administration on events, saw three possible explanations. One, the Defense Department is "conflating wildly different incidents, that is, balloons around Hawaii or Key West vs. crossing middle America," a conflation he called "partisan spin."

China is doing what we do to them. We have sent planes over China or very near China over their 12 miles zone for nearly 100 years. They have not shot down anything. But in the past two decades they have started to defend their airspace. Both America and China have thousands of low atmosphere satellites which surveil the area underneath them. They listen and they record anything they can, light, energy output, heat, traffic, communications, etc. Google maps is output from these satellites. Chinese may be doing the same.
But something to watch out for, is that China claims the entire China sea. Which reaches out to the Philippines and down to Malaysia, Vietnam and North to Japan. China may start shooting down airplanes in that area. They will site our destruction of their balloon for the reason.
Occam’s razor would tend to support explanation #1.
It’s balloon out of proportion.
Even if some portion of this trial balloon fish tale were true, it's obvious the message is Trump did it too so Biden isn't that bad.
Yeah. Cuba is NEAR Florida. Mexico is NEAR Texas. Both have international waters near them. A better idea what “near” means is necessary
“… A slightly different story emerged in the Washington Post, which reported that the Pentagon knew of “past Chinese surveillance balloons “NEAR” Florida and Texas.” Wait a minute: Near Florida and Texas? What does near mean?”

I think it means WITHIN 12,500 MILES of their borders.
“ The forehead slapping obvious part is - who the ding dong hell is going spy from an untethered balloon with zero control over its route?! China has almost 50 satellites in orbit, every one of them capable of spying. Has anyone noticed that neither the US or any other country uses spy BALLOONS?…”

I wouldn’t so quickly rule out nations not using surveillance and “spy” balloons.

“transmitting back to China.”
Eventually.
The largest Red Chinese intelligence organization outside of Red China is in Mexico..near Mexico City.
so they most likely sent the data there, and then that intel group sent it on to the home country-Red China.
How much did Joe get from China for doing nothing about the balloon(s)?
It took a sidewinder to take control over its route.
This is the article I read that made me wonder. I still kind of wonder...

The media is acting like the area they are searching is massive-—
15 football fields==300’ X 15 = 4500 feet long by 4500 feet wide.
4500 X 4500 = 20,250,000 sq ft.
A SECTION of land is 1 mile (5280 X 5280) by 1 mile==640 acres—==27,878,400 sq feet.
The area being searched is less than ONE SECTION of land.
Sounds like somebody just made something up for some obscure reason.
Is my thinking flawed somehow?
No, spy satellites do not hover. Geosynchronous orbits are too high to obtain useful photographs. Spy satellites are low orbit fast-movers, usually in a polar orbit.
That is the question that shows they are making crap up as they go along.
That and it frees up your hands to wallop the clown
I think you forgot the P-3 incident. China did force one of our surveillance planes to land.
This is the government we should believe about the 2029 meeting with Apophis...
