How fast are hot air balloons? This thing was in Billings Montana less than 24 hours ago and just got shot down the coast of South Caroline, some 2000 miles away. That’s roughly 83 mph. Seems way too fast for what seems like a mostly stationary floating object.

It probably can. I was explaining how the up and down movement is used for steering and has been since the first days of balloons.
The same way people navigate canoes in turbulent rivers. They follow their nose - they navigate back and forth until they fund a useful current.
