Report: Climate change fueling conflict in Lake Chad Basin

MOMBASA, Kenya (AP) — Droughts, flooding and a shrinking Lake Chad caused in part by climate change is fueling conflict and migration in the region and needs to be better addressed, a report said Thursday.

Human rights group Refugees International called for the issue to be central to a high-level international conference on the Lake Chad basin next week in Niamey, Niger’s capital.

The report found that shrinking natural resources due to adverse weather are heightening tensions across communities and displacing people. It said that around 3 million people have been displaced and an additional 11 million were in need of humanitarian assistance.

“For too long, insufficient attention has been paid to how climate change fuels violence and displacement,” report lead author Alexandra Lamarche told The Associated Press. “International responses to the Lake Chad basin crisis have singularly focused on the presence of armed groups.”

A 13-year insurgency of the Boko Haram extremist group and other militant groups have destabilized the Lake Chad basin and the wider Sahel region. The basin is shared between Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria.

The Lake Chad region is facing “much more than a climate and ecological crisis,” said Mabingue Ngom, the senior advisor to the executive director of the United Nations population agency. “It is a humanitarian issue touching on peace and regional development.”

The problem is terrorism. A desalination facility or two on the gulf, pumping water to the region is not a difficult thing to do. But of course, the US will be blamed for this.

In the seventies, this same story would have been written with overpopulation as the main villain.

But that go old and dated so climate change is the shiney, new toy for the leftists.

I have heard the same stories and seen the same videos of starving kids, drought, famine... in Africa since the early 60’s. Maybe it has something to do with the people and their culture of totalitarianism and corruption instead?

Refugee International will propose "the only viable solution" - mass immigration of "climate refugees" into Europe and the U.S.

What’s with this? “…caused IN PART by climate change” When did AP ever say “in part” before?

Cause 1) Climate change
Cause 2) Islam

It’s obvious which is the real cause.

True, conflating jihadist operators Boko Haram with the perpetual dance of the Lake Chad water level. A friend is like that being absolutely convinced that (a) Venezuelan llanos ‘refugees’ are caused by climate change not the communist regime of Maduro’s destruction of the economy so the llano people no longer can find seasonal employment in the developed part of Ven.
(b) drought in the Sertao of NE Brazil is super terrible and has never been seen before.Even after reading a copy of ‘Revolt in the Backlands’ I gave her she insisted drought is now worse than in the 1890’s when the Canudos War took place,
