Nebraska Gov. Pillen appoints former Gov. Pete Ricketts as Ben Sasse's Senate replacement

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen announced Thursday that former Gov. Pete Ricketts will fill the Senate seat of Ben Sasse, who officially resigned from Congress this week to return to academia as president of the University of Florida.

Ricketts, a Republican like Pillen and Sasse, will serve two years ahead of a 2024 special Senate election.

Sasse, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and his supporters, officially resigned from the Senate on Sunday. He submitted his resignation last month, saying he would leave office Jan. 8, two years into his second term.

In his announcement Thursday, Pillen said the process to fill Sasse’s seat was taken “incredibly seriously” because the appointee needs to “represent the people” of Nebraska.

The appointee must reflect “values and ideology important to Nebraskans,” including a belief in “less government and fiscal accountability,” and be “person of incredible faith, God-fearing like almost all Nebraskans,” Pillen said.

“It’s clear the person for the job was Sen.-designate Pete Ricketts,” he said.

Martha NaSally voted with Trump 94%. Thank you Arizona Republicans who refused to vote for this “RINO”. Hope you’re happy with Mark Kelly.

She was lackluster. When she lost once (to Sinema), she SHOULD NOT have been appointed Senator, so she could lose again.

THAT’S how we got Mark Kelly.

But Governor Douchebag listened to McConnell.

Nebraska gave us Chuck Hagel. Governors make better candidates having won statewide but they can’t govern as anything but Rinos. More of the same. 2 years as a minority minority senator to prove his conservative bonafides then 6 years to expose his true colors.

As a conservative and a lifelong Nebraska resident, I’m happy with the pick of Pete Ricketts to replace Ben Sasse. Pete Ricketts was a great governor in my opinion and worked hard for the citizens of Nebraska.

Isn't this what the COS "repeal the 17th amendment" ninnys want?
Senators appointed rather than elected?

Appointment by a single executive is different from indirect election (the people electing the electors that choose a senator).

In MA, the Assembly used to be elected, and would then, in turn, elect the upper body (the Council).

In the Electoral College, the people choose members of an assembly, who when choose the president. Same principle.

No.

Governors would recommend senators, and the state legislature would vote on them.

This is worse the current system.
