This reminds me of an episode of Star Trek Next Generation, where in 24th century where once you turn 60 years old, you must commit ritual suicide:
“In this episode, Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett) falls in love with Timicin (David Ogden Stiers), a Kaelon scientist who is attempting to test his theories of stellar ignition in the hopes of saving his world’s dying star. The experiment fails, and Lwaxana encourages Timicin to continue his research, but as he is about to turn sixty years of age, he prepares instead for a ritual suicide. According to Timicin’s cultural tradition, his people voluntarily choose euthanasia to prevent the aged from becoming a burden to the younger generation.”
THIS . . . is the idiocy we have to deal with. My grandmother on my mother's side lived until 77 and was dignified to the very end. My grandparents on my Dad's side each lived to around 94, and they were dignified all the way to the end.
I know that some people lose their dignity when they get very old, but that's not uniform. I remember being told that when Grandpa was on the hospital right before the end, and Grandma and my aunt were worried about leaving him alone, he said, "You girls go on home; I'll be fine." I'm not sure those were his last words, but they came pretty close to being so.

I guess the guys I see running half marathons in their 80’s are just delusional
