They are doing this as cover for the DOJ going after Trump. They have no intention of this being a real investigation, but now they can say they investigate these on a non-partisan basis. Just Garland doing a little CYA after the fact.

They are doing this as cover for the DOJ going after Trump. Correct. This is prep for the promised GOP house investigations into DOJ malfeasance. I would not be surprised if the DOJ is coordinating with McCarthy on the "defense" already.
