Back when I used to travel a lot, I would call my wife all the time (from the airport or at the hotel, etc.) just to stay connected. We didn't talk for a long time but she always felt a part of my life and vice-versa.

From the sound of things so far (pure speculation here), sounds like she's got a romantic involvement.

We never felt that talking on the phone to kids achieved much. “Say hi to your dad.” “Hi.” Anyway, people are different.

I agree that some information gives a strong impression that this is a “disappearance” planned by Mrs. Walshe. The next most likely possibility is the husband. Random abduction is very improbable, although I suppose, since she was posing provocatively on the interwebs, a web-stalker can’t be ruled out.
