"Can you explain how this voting system works?"

The candidate for Speaker must get the majority of votes
of the entire House, not just of the candidate's
party. That majority is 218 votes from a total possible
435 votes. The Republicans have, I think, a House majority
of 222, while the Dems have 212. The Dem candidate can never
be elected Speaker without 6 Republicans voting for him. The problem is that McCarthy can't seem to get 218 Republicans to
vote for him even though they hold the majority in the House.

Either McCarthy caves to the conservative, MAGA House
Republicans who are voting against him or perhaps
he will make some slimy deal with some Democrats
to vote for him and then get the required 218.

Confirming at that point that when if comes to choosing MAGA, the GOP would rather throw in with Democrats. It would be good to see that fact laid wide open.

Thank you. And if the remaining Repub's don't vote for McCarthy (or anybody) no business is done in the House as the voting keeps going.

This has only happened 14 times in history, once since the civil war.
