NASA has to justify its existence and the use of tax dollars so let’s talk this up.
Please note: The tech in 2001 A Space Odyssey (except for the mission to Jupiter and HAL 9000) was exactly what was on the drawing board when the Apollo program was cancelled due to politics. Arthur C. Clarke was very careful to make it reasonable (except for the advanced aliens).
What is the time frame for the USA landing on the moon again, and what is the prognosis for the USA lasting that long?
Or maybe NASA will survive the fall of the USA as the Soviet space program (sort of) survived the fall of the USSR?

Let’s go back to the year 1492. Spain did not send an expedition north to the Arctic because there was nothing there of value. It would be a waste of resources.
I feel that same way about the Moon. Yes, some fancy gadgets can come out of the program. But in general it’s a waste of resources.
Does that make me cranky and shortsighted? I don’t think so. I’d like to say more, but I’ve got to tell some of the neighborhood kids to get off my lawn.
Mining the moon has little or no potential for return on investment.
Maybe Elon will save us.
Since the USA has already been to the moon multiple times, why not set the goal to be landing on Mars, that would be a giant leap forward in space exploration comparable to the moon landings in 1969.
The USA is never going back to the moon.

Sending humans to Mars is probably a reach beyond our grasp. The problems are many and enormous. Not sure it’s worth it using the tech that we have.

I suspect the same problems existed when JFK said we should go to the moon before the end of the decade, considering sending a man into orbit around the earth was still an unknown concept.
