Since I was 15 I worked as a fry cook, a dishwasher, a landscaper, a stock clerk, a delivery driver, a janitor, a piano mover, a retail store manager, a piano rebuilder and technician, an arts craftsman, a guitar teacher, a bookstore clerk, a waiter, a singer, and a lawyer.
A lot of jobs I would have done for no pay, just to gain experience. Thankfully I got paid for all my endeavors.
These days kids don’t work till they get out of college and can’t figure out why no one wants to hire them.

20 years ago I suggested to my electrical contractor friend that he advertise to the ‘better’ people in high school and offer them $15/hour. 20 years ago, and no one would take him up for that much money...like you, I probably would have PAID the contractor $15/hour to learn that skill.
Same. At no point since I was 15 have I been without a job.
I’m in a farm community now, and those guys are different. They lay huge sums on the line every spring and fall despite the uncertainties of weather, market, financing, etc.
They gut it out. No working wage promised. Most I know have modest homes and vehicles.
