The billionaire co-founder of Home Depot is slamming what he says is a poor work ethic among laborers today, claiming that “nobody gives a damn” about job performance in the present-day economy.
“'Nobody works. Nobody gives a damn,” Bernie Marcus told the Financial Times in an interview this week.
In a jeremiad against what he claimed were insufficiently motivated workers, Marcus mimicked them: "Just give it to me. Send me money. I don’t want to work - I’m too lazy, I’m too fat, I’m too stupid."
The business tycoon claimed to the Times that his highly successful hardware chain would never realize the same level of growth and popularity in the modern economy.
“We would end up with 15, 16 stores,” he said. “I don’t know that we could go further.

I hear you. But someone had to say it. Workers are more lazy and entitled these days, if you are in an industry where nothing beyond a GED or HS diploma is required. I see it all the time. I tell my kids you’ve got to do something more than that. A degree, a trade, a certificate, anything.

#1 is there a Navy Academy retired group in your area, they can be a big help.
#2 Wear a Navy ball hat on interviews. Soft pedal your academy degree.
I have friends and just guys, I know, who got a job from HD, Lowes and/or Ace just by having “Veteran” on their driver’s license. Once hired, HD doesn’t want them to stop working.
My wife recommended joining a service group like Kiwanis and let they spread your resume or some member might hire you. She suggested joining a Church and let people know you want a job.
At this stage, soft pedal the MBA.
Good luck, and you will find a job, maybe as a private pilot. They are hiring and training kids out here to be pilots.
I’m in my 80’s and my wife has kept me in good shape. I wear a Navy Ball hat everywhere, I still get job offers. I was just a 2nd class PO with the Security Group.
