They didn't kill him to set an example, they killed him to shut him up.
He was the only one who could have put an end to that "Russian hackers" narrative that was used as evidence to help obtain the FISA warrant to spy on Trump and his associates.
Not what I researched but any time the company does an op there is usually more than one goal.
